#VJ Day75
Today marks the 75th anniversary of the end of the Second World War when Japan surrendered, thus bringing the War in the Pacific to a close more than three months after the end of the War in Europe. For the Allies, it was a day to celebrate, but it was also a day filled with prayer, solemnity, and remembrance.
Though World War II ended seventy-five years ago, it is a little known fact that Russia and Japan are still technically at war. In the war’s aftermath, these two nations, which spent all but six days of World War II under a pact of neutrality, agreed to a ceasefire, but never normalized diplomatic relations. And, thanks to the recent changes to the Russian Constitution, it is unlikely that this will change any time soon. Read my blog post for the American Security Project to learn what led to this seventy-five year impasse, and why these two nations will remain frozen in time, perhaps for another seventy-five years.
